In 1937, that vision became reality with the launch of the <strong>Gazelle Electro<\/strong>, the world\u2019s first production ebike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A True Original<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed in collaboration with <strong>Philips<\/strong>, the Electro was a fully produced ready-for-market electric bicycle. Others had dabbled in electric concepts, but the Electro was the first to reach actual customers. Both would eventually earn the distinguished title of <a href=\"https:\/\/gazelle-blog.pondigital.solutions\/en-us\/history-of-gazelle\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/gazelle-blog.pondigital.solutions\/en-us\/history-of-gazelle\">\u201c<strong>Koninklijk\u201d<\/strong> or \u201c<strong>Royal Dutch\u201d<\/strong><\/a>, a rare honor granted by the Dutch monarchy to companies with national significance, a long-standing reputation for excellence, and at least 100 years of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By modern standards it might sound clunky and limited, but at the time this advancement in technology was truly impressive. The Electro was a bold answer to a question most people hadn\u2019t even thought to ask: <em>What if a bicycle could help you ride farther and easier with electric power?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philips, founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, was already known for pushing the boundaries of technology. First in lightbulbs, then radios, and eventually consumer electronics and healthcare innovation. Their expertise in electrical components was essential to making the Electro\u2019s pioneering power system possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gazelle, founded in 1892, would go on to receive its own Royal designation in 1992, recognizing a century of innovation and craftsmanship in bicycle manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these two Royal Dutch companies created something truly ahead of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The End of the Beginning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the timing couldn\u2019t have been worse. A financial depression in the Netherlands and the looming threat of World War II meant that production of the Electro was soon halted. At a time when electricity was still finding its place in the home, Gazelle was already putting it on two wheels.
