Upright Riding

What is an Upright Bike?

At Gazelle, your comfort comes first. You'll feel it throughout our entire ebike line, but especially with our upright ebikes. These ebikes feature a relaxed frame geometry that allows for a completely upright ride posture and arms comfortably bent at the elbows, shifting stress and weight away from the typical riding pain points. This is achieved with a sub 70° head tube and effective seat tube angle and a shorter reach, thanks to raised and swept back handlebars. All of this combines for an exceptional ride.

Why Ride Upright?

Upright riding offers unique benefits, allowing you to cover further distances without sacrificing your comfort.

  • Weight distribution
Weight is shifted from the wrists to the legs and seat, reducing pressure on your neck, shoulders, wrists, and back.

  • Improved visibility
See and be seen, the upright posture allows you to easily engage with the road without craning your neck as much and it ensures other motorists are more likely to see you.

  • Spine alignment
When riding upright, the spine sits in a more even alignment. This allows you to ride longer comfortably.

Ride like The Dutch

The bicycle has become a staple of Dutch culture, serving as the primary mode of transport for millions. The upright riding style first gained popularity on the streets of Amsterdam, emphasizing comfort and practicality. This design is the perfect solution for working professionals as the relaxed posture allows the rider to deviate from usual cycling attire. It is equally ideal for casual cruisers looking for a fun, comfortable, and stable experience. The upright design, often featuring a low-step frame for easy mounting, reflects a national commitment to cycling as an accessible, stress-free part of daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recumbent bikes can be a good option for those with significant back and joint issues or for those seeking lower impact exercise. Upright bikes on the other hand offer better visibility, keeping you in tune with the road while easing pressure on your neck and wrists. This choice is up to your personal preference and fitness goals.

The idea that upright step-through bikes are meant for ladies is a common misconception. The step-through frame style was actually first designed so priests could ride while wearing their robes. Today, we believe comfort and accessibility should be available to all regardless of gender.

The hub drive is a convenient premium component featured on all Gazelle ebikes in the Easy category. We chose this design for its low maintenance and quiet shifting capabilities. Learn more about ebike gearing here.

Is an easy style ebike right for me?

If you want a relaxed riding experience, the answer is yes! A super upright posture ensures great visibility and comfort. A low-step frame has a low center of gravity, improving balance and stability. It also enables accessibility and stress-free mounting and dismounting. Suspension components and ergonomic features further enhance comfort. Easy bikes are optimal for running errands, carrying kids or a heavier load, or simply more casual riding.
