Torque Sensors

Torque sensors measure how hard you’re pedaling. The more force you apply to the pedals, the more power the motor delivers. It can help the rider get going faster since that first pedal is often the most resistant. While this style can feel more responsive, it means that the rider must exert quite a bit of effort to trigger the electric assist on their bike. This can be counterintuitive since as you down-shift gears when coming to a stop or going uphill, the resistance you’ll feel through your pedals is lighter.

Cadence Sensors

Cadence sensors detect how fast you’re pedaling. Once you start pedaling, the motor provides power based on your selected assist level and the rotation of your wheels. On an ebike with a cadence sensor it’s important to shift gears just like a regular bike. If your bike features a chain and derailleur you should make sure to shift down to your easiest gear as you come to a stop. Internally geared hub bikes can shift gears while stopped.

By being in a lighter gear you can take full advantage of the electric assist and really spin up your wheels to get going. Cadence Sensors Done Right
