Riding Your Electric Bike in the Rain: What You Need to Know
Who doesn’t love a good bike ride to start the day? Whether you’re cruising to work or school, riding an ebike is more than just a healthy choice, it’s a breath of fresh air (literally). But what happens when the skies suddenly open up? Can electric bikes get wet? And can you ride your ebike in the rain, or should you find the nearest shelter and wait it out?
)
The short answer: yes, you can ride your ebike in the rain. While electricity and water usually don’t mix, ebikes are designed with this in mind. Think of it like this: your ebike isn’t meant to go swimming, but it can definitely handle a rainy ride.
At Gazelle, our electric bikes are built to be water-resistant (also called splash-proof). That means they can handle normal rain conditions, though heavy downpours do call for a bit more caution. Rain that’s coming down hard may seep into tiny crevices and increase the risk of rust over time. So go ahead and keep riding, but use your best judgment in stormy weather.
We get it, not everyone has a garage or bike shed. Leaving your electric bike outside in the rain every once in a while isn’t the end of the world. But if you want to keep it in top condition, it’s best to park it under cover as much as possible. If your ebike does get wet, dry it off afterward. Especially the battery area and electrical contacts.
And don’t forget about temperature swings. Hot days and cool nights can cause materials to expand or contract, which might let moisture sneak in where it shouldn’t.
Here’s where you want to be extra careful. The battery is the most sensitive part of your ebike when it comes to water. If water somehow gets inside the battery housing, it could cause a short circuit and that means your battery could drain quickly or even get permanently damaged.
The good news? Most ebike batteries are well protected and sealed inside sturdy casings. Still, it’s smart to keep an eye on the contact points and wipe them dry if they get wet. Corrosion can sneak up if moisture lingers too long.

Absolutely. Commuting to work in the winter often means your ebike gets wet, and that’s when you want to be extra careful. If you’re leaving your ebike outdoors (especially during heavy rain, heatwaves, or winter storms), take the battery inside whenever possible. This not only protects it from moisture, but also from potential damage if the bike tips over in strong wind. Don’t forget however, that when the battery is removed from the bike, the delicate contact points are exposed to the elements. If you must store your bike outside in poor weather for a few hours and you remove the battery, be sure to cover the exposed contact points with something waterproof. In a pinch a secured plastic bag can work, but if this may be a regular occurrence, it’s worth investing in a neoprene or other type of waterproof cover to protect the contact points.
If indoor storage isn’t an option, invest in a waterproof ebike cover. (Emphasis on waterproof, not just dustproof.) It’s not a full replacement for a shed or shelter, but it offers solid protection from rain and debris. And again, remove the battery when you can, and dry off your bike after wet rides to keep it in top shape.

A frequently asked question is whether you can transport the ebike in the rain. Since you can also use this bike in the rain, transporting it in the rain is not impossible. However, you should pay attention to a few things:
Electronic parts (battery and display) must be removed from the ebike. Always do this before transportation.
The contacts that will be exposed without the battery and display, as well as the motor, should be covered with a waterproof protective cover. This will protect important parts of the ebike from dirt and water.
